October 27, 2016:
CNN is reporting on a jail death case being handled by Budge & Heipt. The case arises from the tragic and preventable death of Michael Sabbie, a husband and father of four, while confined in a jail run by a private for-profit corporation. Video from the events captured Mr. Sabbie pleading for help and repeatedly telling jail staff that he could not breathe before collapsing and being drug to his cell. He was found dead the next morning.
Budge & Heipt represents the Sabbie family.
Medical neglect in jails is a serious and ongoing concern, particularly where it leads to significant injury or death. CNN’s story highlights inherent problems that can arise when private companies run jails in pursuit of profit. When inmates experience signs of medical distress in jail and when those signs are disregarded or treated with indifference by medical or jail staff, the results can be beyond tragic for the victim and his or her loved ones.
CNN is to be commended for reporting on this important matter. The story may be read in full HERE.
